Gunde Svan’s promise to the Swedish people about William Poromaa – who makes everyone dream big: “He will do it”

William Poromaa is getting better and better every season.
Then Gunde Svan believes that it is only a matter of time before he takes a championship gold.
– Hard work over a long period of time pays off, says Svan to Sportbibeln.

William Poromaa, 22, has been a regular in the Swedish national ski team since 2020. As a 20-year-old, he was selected for the World Cup premiere, after he won the 15 kilometer race during that year’s Swedish premiere in Bruksvallarna.

Poromaa’s advance

Although Poromaa has long been promising, his curve has not always gone straight up. As you can see, for example, now in the 17-year-old super talent Alvar Myhlback, whose progress can truly be defined as a shooting star. But with each season, Poromaa has stepped up and gotten closer and closer to the top of the world.

First podium in the World Cup came in February 2022 when came third in 15 kilometer classic. During the WC in Planica earlier this year, the first championship medal came, in the form of bronze in the 50 kilometer classic. Poromaa is highly praised and expected to be one of the best cross-country skiers in the future.

Gunde’s tribute

One of those who is happy to praise the young rider is Gunde Svan. The skiing legend believes in a championship gold for Poromaa in the future.
– I really hope so. He has really shown that he belongs up there. If he perseveres, he will do it, says Svan to Sportbibeln.

Gunde himself won seven WC gold and four Olympic gold during his skiing career. The 61-year-old thus knows a thing or two about what it takes to win a gold. Dalmasen points out that Poromaa’s career has not always been obvious, and points out the key to William’s success anyway.
– He hasn’t had this sharp upward curve like Myhlback, he has a different development curve. But I don’t think it’s negative in any way that it’s not as straight as nails. Not many skiers make that trip – that early goes so fast. Statistically, it is more common with Poromaa’s curve, and hard work over a long period of time, which pays off in the end, says Gunde Svan.
