A federal judge is temporarily halting a new law in California that would have banned citizens from carrying guns in parks, on buses, in schools, churches and banks and a host of other public places starting Jan. 1.
The law violates the constitutional right of American citizens to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones, according to Judge Cormac Carney.
Carney claims in his decision to temporarily stop the law from taking effect that it constitutes sweeping legislation that in a “disgusting” way openly challenges what the Supreme Court in Washington DC has made clear about the right to bear arms. That right is laid out in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
But California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is seen as a possible future Democratic presidential candidate, describes the judge’s ruling as giving the green light to even more guns in public settings, places that should be safe for everyone.
– Calling the law repugnant goes against common sense, says Newsom, who wants to be a national voice for stricter gun laws.
