Guido Gryseels (Belgium): “We have successfully transformed the Tervuren museum over the past 20 years”

Guido Gryseels, ex-director of the Tervuren museum in Belgium.

It’s the end of an era at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren, Belgium. Its emblematic director, Guido Gryseels, retires on September 1 after spending 21 years at the head of this institution which has vast collections of African cultural and natural heritage, including 128,000 ethnographic objects and millions of biological specimens. Long considered the archetype of the colonial museum, Tervuren has been profoundly renewed in recent years, adopting a critical look at the Belgian colonial past. A transformation in depth which is however far from being finished, estimates Guido Gryseels.
