Guide: Biathlon World Cup, Sunday 19 February

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

When: Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Location: Oberhof, Germany.

TV/radio: SVT1 and P4 Radiosporten.

+ That’s how it happens

Mass start: 15 km for the men. Everyone starts at the same time and the field contains only 30 skaters because there are only 30 shooting mats. There are two horizontal shooting and two standing and each bar gives a penalty round of 150 meters.

Sweden’s team: Sebastian Samuelsson, Martin Ponsiluoma, Jesper Nelin, Peppe Femling.

+ Latest WC and Olympics

2022: Olympics in Beijing: 1) Johannes Thingnes Bø, Norway, 2) Martin Ponsiluoma, Sweden, 3) Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, Norway. Other Swedish ranking: 11) Sebastian Samuelsson.

2021: WC in Pokljuka: 1) Sturla Holm Lægreid, Norway, 2) Johannes Dale, do, 3) Quentin Fillon Maillet, France. Swedish rankings: 10) Sebastian Samuelsson, 19) Martin Ponsiluoma, 27) Peppe Femling, 28) Jesper Nelin.

+ Ponsiluoma’s last chance

Martin Ponsiluoma rode in the champion number plate in the WC sprint, but failed. In the mass start, he starts as the reigning silver medalist from the Olympics last year. The Swedish shooting coach Johan Hagström believes that Ponsiluoma will get to shoot at least once in the championship, and that he will then win a medal.

+ Samuelsson chases the third medal

Sebastian Samuelsson has won two bronze medals in the WC, in the pursuit start and in the distance race. He says he likes one-on-one duels, as is the case in mass start, but also admits that he has never been very good in mass start. Time to change that now?

+ Can Lægreid threaten Bø?

The odds of a Norwegian standing at the top of the podium after the mass start are very low. Perhaps it is Sturla Holm Lægreid’s greatest chance to threaten the impossible Johannes Thingnes Bø. Lægreid is seen as the better shooter of the two.

+ Hard-hitting final battle

There are not that many mass starts per year and in the last two years’ championships there have been no given winners. In the season’s only mass start, in Annecy before Christmas, Lisa Theresa Hauser won ahead of World Cup leader Julia Simon and Anaïs Chevalier-Bouchet.

+ Hanna Öberg surfs the wave of success

Hanna Öberg has won gold in the distance and silver in the sprint and says that she is indeed satisfied with the WC so far and that the rest is just a bonus. At the same time, she wants to show that her form is still good. She has a World Cup silver in mass start from 2019 and has won two mass starts in the World Cup.

+ Will Elvira Öberg be in medal shape?

If Elvira Öberg manages to find her form after the cold, she is a medal hope in the mass start. She has won the event twice in the World Cup, last season, and was fourth in the winter’s so far only mass start in the World Cup in Annecy.
