GTA Vice City Played with a Modem

A YouTube user was able to play GTA Vice City on the modem after making a few minor changes.

Doom games aren’t the only games being played on devices we never expected to play on. Rockstar’s 2002 hit, the game we’ve all reworked several times GTA Vice City; After a few modifications, it became playable on the modem.

GTA VICE CITY WAS PLAYED WITH THE MODEM

Modders Manawyrn and tSYS took a TP-Link TL-WDRR4900 modem and turned it into a tiny desktop computer that can run software and games. The reason why this is possible is that that model modem has a 32-bit processor. This processor promised much more performance than other modems that were released in 2013 and were sufficient for internet use.

Although the hardware on the modem was sufficient, it was not easy to run GTA VC. Because this is a modem and naturally there is no video card inside. To solve this problem, the makers came up with a little handmade entry themselves. This allowed them to connect an external AMD Radeon HD 7470 card to the modem. Then all they had to do was connect the modem to a monitor and enjoy.

Of course, they encountered a lot of problems to play GTA VC smoothly on the modem. I find it useful to remind you that this device is a modem. At this point, they got help from a Nintendo employee who was developing the WiiU port of Vice City.

When everything was completed, in order to play Vice City, they had to install Linux on a 10-year-old modem, slightly modify the source code of the game, and connect an external graphics card to the modem. As you can appreciate, this is not the easiest way to play Vice City. Still, it’s an impressive attempt.
