GTA 6 will probably get the feature that has kept Skyrim relevant and fresh for years

Will Rockstar and Take-Two provide full mod support for GTA 6? This very topic came up in the publisher’s latest financial report.

What is Rockstar and Take-Two’s stance on mod support? During the earnings call for the latest financial report, Take-Two not only gave an update on the release period of GTA 6, CEO Strauss Zelnick also talked about content created by players (“user generated content”, or UGC for short).

The publisher’s CEO explained: “Obviously we’re excited about what we’re seeing in the GTA modding community and we think it’s pretty exciting. At the end of the day, entertainment companies have to provide consumers with great entertainment. That’s the starting point.”

With GTA 6, the popular franchise once again makes a noticeable graphic leap:

Zelnick goes on to say that they are proud to be making the best entertainment in the world with GTA and Co., and that they want to continue to enable consumers to expand and improve this content for their own use.

Mod support for GTA 6 is clearly planned.

It is important, the CEO concluded, to protect one’s own intellectual property, but also the intellectual property of other people. In addition, Zelnick does not believe that the company or even the industry will ever be defined solely by mods and UGC. User-generated content services such as Roblox are more like platforms than digital entertainment titles.

What plans might Take-Two have for the mods? According to a report from dexerto.com, the developers plan to improve the GTA Online experience through expanded mod tools. Therefore, Rockstar Games is said to have bought the FiveM mod team in August 2023 (via rockstargames.com).

FiveM is behind the largest Rockstar roleplay and creator communities. Apparently they are now working on a public version of the mission creator, which is scheduled to be integrated into GTA Online in fall 2024.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC? While it is certainly possible to use privately developed modifications on consoles, this is often much more complicated and restrictive than on the PC. The GTA series in particular is not exactly known for simultaneous launches on consoles and PC.

  • GTA 3 was released on October 22, 2001 for the PlayStation 2, followed by a PC release on May 21, 2002.
  • GTA: Vice City landed on the PlayStation 2 on October 27, 2002, and the PC version made its debut in May 2003.
  • GTA: San Andreas was released on October 26, 2004 in the USA (October 29, 2004 in the EU) on PlayStation 2, with ports for PC and Xbox following on June 7 and June 10, 2005, respectively.
  • On April 29, 2008, owners of an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 were able to enjoy the launch of GTA IV, while the PC version did not leave the starting block until December 2, 2008.
  • GTA V was released on September 17, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and on Xbox One and PS4 on November 18, 2014. PC users had to wait until April 14, 2015.
  • At the moment, everything indicates that Rockstar and Take-Two will continue this strategy with GTA 6. The release in autumn 2025 is only confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. In the latest financial report there was no mention of a PC port: Take-Two confirms release dates for GTA 6, Civilization 7 and a new game for Lord of the Rings
