GTA 6 could be released later than hoped

Kotaku’s editors spoke to various sources close to Rockstar Games about the development of GTA 6. Apparently the signs are already pointing to a postponement of the release date.

What is known about the development of GTA 6? Just a few days ago we reported that Rockstar Games had ordered the staff back to the offices in order to increase the team’s productivity and security for the project (read: to avoid further leaks if possible).

The employees view this measure with concern because they fear a hard crunch phase – similar to what happened with other Rockstar projects, such as Red Dead Redemption 2.

It fits that GTA 6 is currently in the hot development phase. The hotly anticipated blockbuster title is scheduled to appear in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

The first trailer for GTA 6 already left a lasting impression:

What are the insiders reporting now? Kotaku editors spoke to several sources close to GTA 6 development and received the following nuggets of information:

  • The target release period was apparently communicated internally as “spring 2025”.
  • However, development is already lagging behind plans, according to the sources.
  • The managers are visibly nervous that they even have to consider a postponement to 2026.
  • Kotaku’s interlocutors are also currently expecting a postponement – a release in autumn 2025 is much more likely than the currently targeted period of spring 2025.
  • What does this mean for developers? Looking at the numerous reports from the past decades about crunch phases at Rockstar Games as well as the most recent stories from insiders, it seems quite likely that the leadership will fall back into old crunch patterns with GTA 6 in order to support the development of the ambitious project to get back on track.

The employees’ fears could come true. Numerous personal reports from those affected show how dangerous long crunch phases are. Here is a particularly bad case:
