GTA 5: the paid next-gen and the free online mode, all the info

GTA 5 the paid next gen and the free online mode

GTA 5 will have definitely crossed the ages. Originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360 several years ago, the second best-selling game of all time is celebrating its arrival on next-gen, under somewhat vague conditions that we will explain to you in detail.

[Mise à jour le 9 mars 2022 à 14h35] GTA 5 needs no introduction. Rockstar Games’ flagship game released in 2013 has sold over 160 million copies, slowly conquering every possible gaming platform. Originally released for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 quickly established itself as one of the biggest hits in video game history, claiming the coveted title of second best-selling game of all time. After an equally splendid journey on PS4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One, the legendary game is moving into the next-gen era, with a release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15th. Only, in this period of transition between different generations of consoles, players have difficulty in situating this new release. So GTA 5 next-gen, upgrade or new game? We answer you.

What are the next-gen versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online?

We told you in the introduction, the period that the world of console video games is going through is quite complex, stuck between an older generation of consoles and a new generation that is difficult to find in stores. As a result, the transition between “old-gen” and “next-gen” is taking longer than expected, hence the proliferation of “cross-gen” game releases, available on both PS4 and PS5 for example. . Only here, the Xbox Series X and the PS5 offer performance much higher than that of their elders, benefiting in particular from technologies such as Ray-Tracing and SSD storage. It is therefore quite normal for popular titles like GTA 5 to be brought to the new generation of consoles.

For the consumer, this portage generally translates into two ways. First, a free upgrade to the next-gen version for all players who own the game on the older console generation. Second, the release of games entirely different from the old titles, incorporating the new technical features of the new consoles and sold separately. And when it comes to GTA 5, it looks like Rockstar is leaning towards the second option. To take advantage of these new versions of the game, offering 4K textures, Ray-Tracing and 60 fps, you will therefore have to buy the game again in its Xbox Series X | S or PS5 version. A new hard to swallow for some of the players.

If you’ve already spent long hours on the streets of Los Santos on your PS4 or Xbox One, and want to buy one of the next-gen versions of GTA 5, know that you will have the opportunity to transfer your character from one console generation to another. These transfers concern both story mode and online mode, and will be unique. It will therefore be possible to transfer a single-player save and an Online mode save to your next-gen console. Please note that these transfers are only possible between consoles from the same manufacturer, PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series. Here is the transfer method as described by Rockstar:

Story :

Upload your save from your old console to the Rockstar Social Club: go to your game on your PS4 or Xbox One, then to the Game tab in the pause menu. There you will find the “Upload Save Game” option. Your save will then be uploaded to your Rockstar Social Club account, and will remain there for 90 minutes. When you log into your account from your new console (PS5 or Xbox Series), you can then recover your save.

In line :

No special handling needed for GTA Online, just log into your Rockstar Games Social Club profile on your new console and enjoy your character as you left it on your old-gen console.
