GTA 5 never continued the story because you spent too much money in GTA Online

A former Rockstar employee spoke in an interview about the reasons for a canceled DLC for GTA 5. The main reason was players who spent too much money in GTA Online.

Who is the employee? Joseph Rubino worked as a senior cinematographer at Rockstar for six years. In an interview on the YouTube channel SanInPlay, he reports that he worked on a story DLC, which was ultimately canceled. The actor who played Trevor in GTA 5 also reported on the DLC, which then simply disappeared.

Rubino claims that the reason for this is that the players spent too much money.

GTA Online is too successful

To what extent have players overspent? In the interview, Rubino goes on to say that the release of GTA Online was a financial success right from the start. This led to Rockstar changing its priorities and focusing more on GTA Online.

Even though the online mode is basically free for players, they have the option to spend money, for example in the form of in-game purchases. Rubino then goes on to explain that this was probably the only reason why they decided against the DLC. For him, it was particularly annoying because they were already halfway finished.

What happened to the DLC content? However, Rubino said that the content from the planned DLC was not simply deleted. He believes that a lot of the stuff ended up in later versions of GTA Online. This way, he is sure that the stuff that was already completed was not wasted and that players will now find it in the DLCs for GTA Online.

Many players are still passing the time waiting for GTA 6 with GTA Online. However, a change requested by many players ended up behind a paywall. Some now see this as a bad sign for the latest part of the franchise: Bad sign for GTA 6? Often requested innovation for GTA Online ends up behind a paywall
