De Machinerie was a cultural project in the field of film and images. Four multifunctional cinemas were to be built in the former Central Studios building on Gietijzerstraat, along with workplaces, studios, event and exhibition spaces. Catering was also planned in the building. According to the municipality, De Machinerie had to become a lively place to go out for local residents, the city and the region with national appeal. The intention was that film house ‘t Hoogt, the Netherlands Film Festival and Fotodok would be given a place there. The plan was partly financed by the owner of the building. The municipality would contribute 3.55 million euros.
