Sebastian Fitzek is not only a big name in book form. Several of the German writer’s works have now been made into films – and they have been extremely successful. A few days ago, Amazon Prime released the almost 100-minute thriller The Way Home, which tells an extremely exciting story using a telephone call.

This concept creates a very special dynamic that can also be found in The Guilty from 2018. Here you can continue watching The Way Home. And if that’s not enough for you, you can get the US version straight away. Netflix re-released the Danish original three years later.

After the walk home on Amazon Prime: The Guilty delivers telephone thrills in the emergency call center

The Guilty tells of the police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren), who was transferred to an emergency call center. The reason for this is a criminal court casewhich is currently running against him. Until the matter has been clarified, he has to answer urgent calls from people in need and provide them with the best possible assistance.

The job is one thing above all else: routine. But then Asger receives a call from a frightened woman who apparently Sitting in a car with her kidnapper and pretends to talk to her daughter. Asger tries everything in his power to help the stranger. But his options are limited.

The Guily with Jack Gyllenhaal: The Netflix version weakens the ending of the Danish original

The Guilty gets a lot out of its manageable setting and will be remembered as an intense chamber piece. The Netflix remake, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners), takes the most important parts of the story and relocates them to the Los Angeles area.

Ultimately, the film misses the chance to expand on the basic ideas: The Guilty in 2021 is a shallow new edition and erases the ambivalent ending. Where the original takes us into the Uncertainty of the end credits leaves, the remake ensures that a hero is born who finds redemption in a cathartic moment.

If you want to see the telephone thriller double The Guilty for yourself after The Way Home, you can now do so in the stream from the following providers: Amazon offers the original various purchase and rental options. Netflix has the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake available for streaming subscription.
