It has now been more than a week since Grindavik’s 4,000 inhabitants were evacuated after a magma tunnel, a so-called rock passage, was discovered under the town.
So far, no eruption has occurred, but experts still agree that it will happen in the near future. In several places around the city, they have started building large earthen embankments to protect against the lava flow.
– There is a continued risk for Grindavik, but also for the power plant Svartsengi, and the Blue Lagoon, says Ólafur Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics at Uppsala University to TT.
According to the Icelandic authorities responsible for public protection, it is likely to take months before it is safe for the residents of the area to return home – even if there is no outbreak, writes the AP news agency.
