Grey’s Anatomy loses another leading lady in season 19 – and with it one of the last Meredith connections

Greys Anatomy loses another leading lady in season 19

The German start of Grey’s Anatomy’s 19th season is now certain and falls on the April 17, 2023 on Disney+ *. But that doesn’t mean that the series is standing still in the USA: After the loss of the main character Meredith, the next star has now announced his departure: Kelly McCreary is leaving the series as Maggie Pierce.

Goodbye Maggie: Kelly McCrearys is leaving Grey’s Anatomy after 9 seasons

dr In Grey’s Anatomy, Maggie Pierce was the illegitimate daughter of Meredith’s mother, Ellis, with Dr. Richard Webber and with it Meredith’s half sister. After her introduction at the end of season 10, the child prodigy raised by adoptive parents emerged and spent 190 episodes on the road as a cardiothoracic surgeon in the hospital. Most recently she married Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill), although there is a crisis in the marriage of the two in season 19. A narrative lever for leaving could be used here.

Exactly how the character will leave Maggie Grey’s Anatomy is not yet known. Her final episode will be the 14th episode of the 19th season on April 13, 2023. Kelly McCreary made the following statement about her exit:

After 9 seasons, I’m saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Gray Sloan family. It was a enormous honor to be part of a legendary TV institution like Grey’s Anatomy to be. I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff and ABC for the opportunity and also thank the fans for their passionate support. The Grey’s Anatomy star credits the opportunity to research a TV character for so long “rare gift”, which brought her together with inspiring people in front of and behind the camera. At the same time, she’s looking forward to it “next chapter” her career. That might sound like a familiar statement to those following Ellen Pompeo’s exit after 19 years, who longed for something new after the series. Nevertheless is It’s not entirely clear whether Kelly McCreary wanted to leave or whether her role was simply written out of the series. Where the actress will be seen next is not yet known. Grey’s Anatomy soon without any Greys? Maggie’s departure takes the final Meredith bridge from the series

Although it sometimes appears in Grey’s Anatomy that Meredith is related to everyone in the hospital, Maggie was the last real relative, who still represented the Gray family in Seattle. Meredith’s other half-sister, Lexie, died in a plane crash. Mother Ellis Gray lost the battle with her Alzheimer’s disease and father Thatcher also passed away several seasons ago. Meredith took her three children to Boston.

Meredith’s only remaining “sister” at the hospital is now her sister-in-law, Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), alongside surrogate “father” Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.). The latter, along with Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is the last cast member to have survived all 19 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy since Season 1. Even the introduction of a new Meredith relative in season 19 doesn’t change the lack of direct kinship, as the new doctor is on Derek’s side of the family and is just Meredith’s nephew by marriage.

So Grey’s Anatomy will have to change its name to Anatomy soon? Not quite. We look in vain for blood relatives after Maggie’s departure from Gray Sloan Hospital. But at least the The name of the hospital can still justify the title of the series in the future.

In any case, Grey’s Anatomys Ellen Pompeo congratulated her fictional sister on leaving:
