Gretzky parkway overpass, 403 reopen

MTO says 403 overpass expected to reopen following inspection

A section of Highway 403 and the Wayne Gretzky Parkway overpass reopened early Tuesday morning after being closed since early Monday afternoon.

At about 2 pm Monday, a piece of construction equipment being transported along the highway struck the overpass, dislodging a protective concrete girder that fell to road below. That resulted in the temporary closing of all 403 lanes and the overpass.

Following an inspection by Ministry of Transportation structural engineers and maintenance staff, the highway and overpass were reopened at 5:30 am, the City of Brantford said in a news release.

The overpass was struck last December and again in January by oversized loads, causing damage that led to the closing of the median northbound lane pending repairs.

The ministry said a tender call has been issued for the repairs.
