Greta Thunberg’s is sentenced for disobedience to the authorities after a climate action in the Oljehamnen in Malmö. The penalty is 90 daily fines of SEK 50 each.
– It shows the flaws in our system, says Greta Thunberg after the verdict.
There was a large press gathering when Greta Thunberg was going to appear in court. After the conviction was announced, Greta Thunberg clearly showed her displeasure. She believes that it is the companies that should be held accountable.
– We who are trying to defend people, the planet and lives who have to take the hit, she says after the trial.
Despite the criticism, Greta Thunberg will not appeal the verdict.
On July 24, Greta Thunberg was sentenced to 30 daily fines of SEK 50 for disobedience to law enforcement when she refused to listen to a police order in connection with a demonstration on June 19.
– We have to remember who the real criminals are, who it is that puts people in danger, told TV4 Nyheterna after she received her sentence.
Obstructed tankers
Just hours after she left the Malmö district court, she and members of the organization “Take back the future” were on site at another climate action. She and other activists sat on the road and prevented tankers from leaving the port. The purpose of the actions is to protest against the fossil industry.
Today she is sentenced for disobedience to law enforcement. The daily fines are tripled compared to last time – to SEK 90 instead of SEK 50. She must also pay SEK 1,000 to the Crime Victims Fund. She believes that her actions took place in an emergency situation – also in the sense of the law.
– We commit these actions, fully aware of the potential consequences. We still think it’s worth it, because we still know what’s at stake and we, as young people, don’t want to see our future taken away from us for a long time.
