Gremlins Was Actually Darker

Gremlins writer Chris Columbus revealed that the film’s original script planned for a darker tone and a high death count.

Classic film written by Chris Columbus and released in 1984 gremlinsis known for its unique structure that blends horror and comedy. However, according to Columbus’ latest statements, the original script of the film contained a much darker story. For example, the adorable Mogwai Gizmo was transformed into a Gremlin rather than being a permanently innocent character in the movie. In addition, the Peltzer family and the townspeople had a much bloodier fate. With the intervention of producer Steven Spielberg, this dark tone was softened and a more family-friendly production emerged.

Shocking Details in the Gremlins Script

Chris Columbus explained in an interview with Vanity Fair that his original script depicted the Peltzer family in a much more tragic light. For example, Billy’s mother gets killed by Gremlins and her head rolls down the stairs. In addition, it is stated that the family’s dog, Barney, was also killed and even eaten by Gremlins. Columbus added that the Gremlins went to the McDonald’s restaurant and ate the people, but they didn’t even touch the hamburgers.

One of the biggest changes in the movie was the Gizmo character. In the original script, Gizmo turned into a Gremlin at an early stage in the story. However, Steven Spielberg changed this idea, arguing that a character that the audience can emotionally connect with should be permanent. “One of Steven’s best ideas was to keep Gizmo cute and innocent,” Columbus said, noting that this change contributed greatly to the film’s success.

Although the darker elements of the original script were toned down, Gremlins still managed to retain some dark moments. The scene in which Kate, played by Phoebe Cates, explains the tragic death of her father was left in the film despite the studio’s objections. Columbus stated that this scene played an important role in maintaining the balance of the film.
