Ukraine: the major fault of the West
René Andron, Marseilles (Bouches-du-Rhône)
“Hold”. The word cover title of L’Express is heavy with meaning. We have gone from offensive and optimistic rhetoric to a defensive and pessimistic version. By not giving the Ukrainians the means in good time to push their offensive advantage, the Westerners committed a major fault on the political and moral level. Russia had time to organize the defense in depth of the conquered territories, which leads us to the failure of the Ukrainian summer offensive and to the bleeding of its human and material potential. The West and especially Europe have demonstrated that they do not really give themselves the means to quickly win this war which they are waging by proxy. The message has been well received by authoritarian regimes in the rest of the world, as evidenced by the recent enlargement of the BRICS. Make no mistake about it: if Ukraine fails, the consequences for us will be disastrous, even in our daily lives and in the long term. Let’s stop talking words and actually support the war to win it, before another dictator tests us. (“Ukraine: the challenges of the war and after“, L’Express of August 24.)
What influence for researchers?
Guylaine Remeur, Cagnes-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes)
Keir Giles’ answers to Alix L’Hospital’s questions are clear, relevant and fair. It outlines solutions, advice, provides leads to clarify the situation. But are the words of all these researchers, these historians, these professors followed by effects? Do they have any influence on our ministers? This questioning inspires me every time I read the “Ideas” pages of your magazine. Thank you to L’Express in any case for allowing me to try in my humble place as a citizen to reflect and understand our world so cruel. (“Keir Giles: ‘Russia is pursuing a goal of neocolonial expansionism’L’Express of August 10.)
Learning: stop windfall effects!
Laurent Neulat, La Motte-Servolex (Savoie)
Industrial companies encounter difficulties in recruiting. In vocational high schools, industrial courses are not very attractive. It is therefore important to preferentially target financial aid in these industrial professions up to bac + 2. Beyond this level, students benefit from a windfall effect. However, today, as your graph shows, it is mainly students who benefit from it. It’s a shame. (“Learning: should the aids be planed? Two specialists debate”L’Express of August 24.)
Retreats: let’s dissolve the COR!
Louis Causero, Essey-lès-Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle)
I appreciated the article on the “hidden deficit” of pensions and the role, to say the least, condemnable of the Pensions Orientation Council (COR), a committee whose main function is theoretically to enlighten the government. I hope that François Bayrou and Jean-Pascal Beaufret will manage to obtain its dissolution. And I will then address the congratulations to L’Express, because the rest of the national press seems discreet to me on the subject! (“Pensions: a “hidden deficit”? Finally, the debate opens on the COR figures”on Lexpress.fr)
Greens with leftist sauce
Yves Briche, Saint-Lô (Manche)
If the founding fathers of the ecological party see from beyond what it has become, they must sink into despair. From saviors of the planet in danger, the ecologists have turned into a violent formation, under the influence of far-left militants who have infiltrated them. Currently an emblematic figure of these leftist Greens, the priceless Sandrine Rousseau does her best to ridicule her own party with often delusional statements. The ecologists are now a troop that tries to compete with the Rogue in the art of wreaking havoc in the country. And, alas, they succeed more and more often… (“”Medina, you shouldn’t invite him”: environmentalists tear each other apart on the eve of their summer days”on Lexpress.fr).
