On Monday, Greenland’s parliament announced that a new bill will be quickly investigated and processed on Tuesday, reports the Greenland news site Sermitsiaq.
The proposal developed by Greenland’s local government, Landsstyret Naalakkersuisut wants to ban all anonymous and foreign contributions to political work in Greenland.
The background is that the local government, in the wake of the plays made by US President Donald Trump, wants to secure the integrity of the upcoming parliamentary elections to be implemented later this year in Greenland.
After starting with the US wanting to buy Greenland from Denmark, Donald Trump rhetoric has hardened. He has stated that he does not exclude military intervention and has threatened with penalties against Denmark and Danish companies unless the requirement meets.
Uncertainty after Trump’s play
In the referral opinion from the local government, it is clear that the action is based on increased uncertainty about the situation and risks regarding possible impact on the election.
It is written that the proposal should be seen “in light of the geopolitical interests in Greenland and the prevailing situation where representatives of an ally great power have expressed interest in taking over and controlling Greenland”.
The proposal also includes a ban on contributions to parties’ local and youth departments as well as existing members in the Folketinget and Inatsisartut, or those who are running for them.
