A green tide is the name given to a proliferation of green marine algae that can cover the beaches, as the concentration of specimens is high. The alga in question belongs to the genus Ulvaand is commonly referred to as “sea lettuce”.

In Brittany, the phenomenon of tide green is repeated every year, where the beaches are infested withUlva armoricana, as well asUlva rotundata in the south of Brittany in the spring. During this season, the natural conditions are favorable (enough light, good water temperature and site geography). However, the primary cause of the green tide phenomenon is the abundant supply of nitrates from rivers and rivers to theocean. These nitrates, mainly fromagricultureare nutrients for algae and cause their proliferation seasonally.

A green tide is particularly nauseating, but above all has harmful ecotoxicological and health effects.
