The US Congress has voted through a new law that expands the possibilities of detaining undocumented people suspected of crimes.
The law, whose approval is seen as a win for President Donald Trump, makes it mandatory to detain an undocumented person suspected of theft or more serious crime.
Trump has promised an across-the-board tightening of immigration laws and has also set his sights on mass deportations.
