Being able to spice up your meal at home with pre-fried French fries or strips straight from the freezer is a real everyday luxury.

French fries are the perfect barbecue side dish or good to munch on just as they are with a good dipping sauce. The range in the shops is large and there is a divided opinion as to whether you want your fries crispy and dark, or lighter and soft.

All about food has done a big test on eight bags of frozen fries that are cooked in the oven to find the optimal fries for summer barbecue evenings.

All French fries in the test have a cooking time in the oven between 15 and 40 minutes and have been cooked according to the instructions on the packaging.

When the fries have been rated, the taste panel has gone on the potato taste versus the taste of frying oil and the texture – crispy with a softer interior.

Verdict: Icas Pommes Strips have a weak smell and too little taste of potatoes. The baking becomes uneven and the crispy surface disappears quickly and then they become too soft. Otherwise fairly neutral, and in need of a lot of spice, writes All about food.
