Great presentation by Starfield sparks a religious war among supporters of the $588M MMO Star Citizen

As part of a presentation on 11.6. Bethesda presented its new SF role-playing game “Starfield”. That should be out in 2023. The presentation sparked discussion among fans of Star Citizen, which has now raised $588 million through crowdfunding but still has no release date. Are the games comparable or not?

This was the presentation: On the evening of June 11th showed Bethesda, which had previously viewed the showcase for the Xbox, their new SF role-playing game Starfield (via youtube).

In the presentation, the Bethesda magic is conjured up: Starfield is not just a “Bethesda world”, but a galaxy. You go, let yourself be distracted from the actual main task and realize 2 hours later that you have gotten into a new adventure.

The presentation had some highlights to offer:

  • In this way, you will meet and hire companions – the player will even be able to have a love affair with them, as in Mass Effect
  • crew members can also be hired, giving the ship further bonuses
  • The emphasis of the presentation was on the freedom of the game and the size of the galaxy: players don’t have to be heroes, they can also sell sandwiches
  • A system reminiscent of Lego lets players assemble their ships
  • Bethesda emphasized action and role-playing aspects of Starfield
  • Presentation earns many compliments – was the highlight of the evening

How was the presentation? The presentation was very well received by many viewers, as could be seen from the reactions in the Twitch chat. Some scoff at the fact that “typical Bethesda game” not only means “a lot of freedom”, but also “many bugs” – but in general Bethesda has already convinced.

It was among the games that Xbox on 6/11. showed, certainly the highlight and seemed to have earned the “presentation all to himself” and to fill it in full.

It was noticeable that the viewers of the presentation often said something in the chat like “That’s the end of Star Citizen” or “Star Citizen is now dead.”

“Starfield brings what I wanted from Star Citizen – decades earlier”

How is this discussed among Star Citizen fans?t? Totally different. At Star Citizen there was a discussion about Starfield parallel to the gameplay presentation (via reddit). There are 3 positions:

Here’s what people who were immediately excited about Starfield said:

  • One user says he was totally blown away by the Spaceship customization, it’s way better than Star Citizen, which he’s been playing since 2016. You can do piracy, dock with ships, there is food and water – it’s all totally crazy.
  • a second user thinks Starfield looks amazing and is a “Day 1 must buy”.
  • a third says Starfield appears to offer what people wanted from Star Citizen – only decades earlier. An allusion to the long development period of Star Citizen, which some accuse of suffering from a “feature creep”. Boss Chris Roberts doesn’t see it that way.
  • A Starfield supporter writes:

“So far it’s exposing Star Citizen. Starfield seems to focus on what most people want and what the game should be. Except for the multiplayer part, which is big but doesn’t exist for most of Star Citizen at the moment, Starfieldd covers everything I want in Star Citizen.”

A second group of users hopes that the release of Starfield will now put pressure on Star Citizen. This quote serves as an example:

  • “Let’s hope it causes the Star Citizen devs to f*ck up”
  • The presentation had something of LEGO in places:

Fans criticize comparison: “It was just an extended commercial”

But a third group is adamant about Star Citizen:

  • “This has nothing to do with Star Citizen. You click on a city and a cutscene takes you there.”
  • “So how many friends do you want to play Starfield with?”
  • “Check out the character creation. It all looks very basic. The hair is just bad […] Saying Starfield is like Star Citizen without having played it isn’t a very sensible attitude. Everything they say so far is just a showcase. I’ve heard that from a lot of games. The live stream itself is just an extended advertisement trying very hard to say what people want to hear.”
  • Bethesda showed that Starfield is where you can meet your biggest fan:

It says here that the people praising Starfield here aren’t fans of Star Citizen at all, but are some of the “Star Citizen” haters coming out of Reddit, which is about “refunds” to Star Citizen.

In the run-up to the presentation, there was already a leak about Starfield:
