Anyone who wants to distribute images taken by drones needs permission from the Land Survey. Right now, their processing time for such cases is 40 working days, reports P4 Värmland.

Among the applicants are municipalities, news media, brokers and private individuals.

Now the authority receives some complaints. Anders Sandin is the business area manager for geodata at Lantmäteriet and he understands that the waiting time can cause problems.

– Above all, it is regrettable for those who have a commercial business, he says to the radio channel.

The purpose of the permit requirement is to protect sensitive information that is important to total defence.

In the past five years, the number of applications for permission to disseminate drone images has gone from approximately 700 to just over 23,000.

This year, the Land Survey expects to receive 30,000 such applications. The authority wants the government to allocate more resources to the handling of proliferation permits.
