Before Julia Ducournau made Titane, one of the most disturbing and best films of the last year, she made an impressive feature film debut with Raw. It is about a teenager who is in cannibalistic abysses loses.

Raw combines youthful overstrain with hard-hitting horror

Julia Ducournau’s film revolves around 16-year-old Justine (Garance Marillier), who, like her older sister Alexia (Ella Rumpf), is about to complete elite training as a veterinarian and thus follow in their parents’ footsteps. But soon she feels more and more uncomfortable with the parts macabre rituals the training center, where she has to eat raw rabbit liver, among other things. Alongside this, Justine discovers an increasingly disturbing side of himself.

With her film, the director stages a variant of a typical coming-of-age story, in which she tells of discoveries and insights that a young girl experiences as she grows older. She pulls through the story over and over again bloody, chilling motives of the cannibal film.

With sleepwalking dream logic, Ducournau unfolds intense scenes in which, for example, Justine goes to bed with her homosexual roommate. While she’s been coveting him all along, the sequence suddenly turns into a nightmare with Justine biting her arm to save hers obscure lust for meat to suppress.

The mix off sensitive coming-of-age observation and brutal cannibal fever dream results in an exciting horror insider tip that cannot be shaken off so easily after viewing it.

As the Hollywood Reporter reported at the time, it happened at the presentation of Raw at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival multiple fainting spells. As a result, an ambulance had to be called to treat the shocked audience members. Definitely the perfect promo for Julia Ducournau’s film.
