Ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Åre Avalanche Center warns of great avalanche danger in the southern Jämtlandsfjällen.
This after heavy snowfall in recent days, which is now expected to continue before Christmas.
“Avalanche triggering is possible on steep slopes, even with only a small additional load,” writes National Avalanche Forecasts from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
The avalanche danger in Åre, Bydalen, Sylarna and Storulvån is currently assessed as significant.
– If you go off-piste, you expose yourself to the risk of being dragged into an avalanche and being buried, says Mårten Johansson at the avalanche center to SVT.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency states, via Lavinprognoser.se, that large avalanches can be triggered spontaneously in the event of significant avalanche danger.
“Assess the snow cover and terrain carefully. Be very careful when you choose where and how you go,” they write.
