According to NBC News, Lesh grew up in the suburbs of San Francisco and began his musical journey playing the violin, which he later switched to the trumpet.
In 1965, Lesh’s friend Jerry Garcia recruited him as the bassist for a band originally called The Warlocks. In the band, Lesh played bass and Garcia played guitar.
The Grateful Dead combined rock, jazz and folk to become one of the most influential bands in American history.
The group broke up after 30 years, after which Lesh founded a jazz group called Phil and Friends.
