Grass fire sets home and car ablaze near Port Dover

A grass fire that set fire to a nearby home and car on East Quarter Line Road near Port Dover on Wednesday resulted in an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Norfolk County Fire officials issued a warning after the fire that no one is allowed to burn ditches in the county as they are part of the municipal road allowance and don’t belong to landowners.

“Burning large areas of dry grass without adequate means of containment … can have devastating consequences,” warns the department.

Firefighters and Norfolk County Paramedic Services arrived at the home at about 3:30 pm on April 10 and found the fire had involved a home, car and several piles of debris on the property.

One person was taken to Norfolk General Hospital for evaluation and observation.

The lost home involved was not insured, said the firefighters, who also reported no injuries were sustained by the emergency personnel who responded to the incident.
