A five-year-old boy was rescued by his 76-year-old grandfather after being attacked by a python in the garden of his home in Byron Bay, Australia.

– He was swimming with his brother and out of nowhere a three-meter-long python appeared and managed to sink its teeth into his heel. They both fell into the pole and the snake wrapped around him, said father Ben Blake to radio channel 3AW.

The boy’s 76-year-old grandfather Allen dove in and retrieved him with the snake still attached to his leg. Once up, the father was able to pry the snake free.

– It was a bit of an ordeal, sums up Ben Blake.

The five-year-old survived with minor wounds to his leg.

– He is a little hero. When we washed off the blood and explained that he wouldn’t die because it wasn’t a poisonous snake, he took it well, says Blake about the son.

When asked if he had seen similar snakes before, Ben Blake replied:

– This is Australia. They are here, but a large python lurking in the bushes right next to the pool is not something you see every day.
