The Grand Oral is prepared throughout the Terminale cycle and aims to assess students’ skills such as mastery of speaking, in a structured and reasoned manner, and the ability to develop thinking. This exam, which has existed since 2021, aims to assess the oratorical potential of students.
To prepare for the Grand Oral test, you must train ahead of time with the jury’s expectations in mind. For this, he can start training on the quality of his oral performance : speak aloud while standing, straight, in his room, in front of a mirror for example, capture the attention by emphasizing important words, articulate his remarks well.
As for continuous speaking : he can time his time, define a given time for the introduction, the development and the conclusion of his oral. He must also work on the punctuation of his sentences, so that the speech is held over time.
Finally, beforehand, the candidate must develop a clear and reasoned plan, with keywords related to their knowledge learned in class or outside. To practice, he can prepare a simple sheet with the main key words, memorize them and speak according to this plan. How does the Grand oral du bac take place?
The Grand oral test takes place in several stages. Two questions are prepared during the year with the teachers. For the general baccalaureate, these questions relate to one or two specialist courses, and on the specialties of the series concerned for the technological path. The jury chooses one of the questions on which the student will be questioned. In other words, there is:
- Preparation for 20 minutes : the student prepares his oral, he can create a support (map, diagram), he establishes his plan and his arguments.
- 5 minute presentation, standing : the student explains why he chose to approach this question by developing his answer.
- Exchange with the candidate for 10 minutes : the jury questions the candidate to help him to deepen his subject, and thus to evaluate the solidity of his acquired knowledge and his argumentative capacities.
- Exchange on the orientation project for 5 minutes) : the student must explain how this question is related to his professional project or his pursuit of higher education.
How long does the Grand Oral last?
In all, the Grand oral lasts 40 minutes : 20 minutes of preparation and 20 minutes of passage in front of the jury.

The subject or issue chosen for the oral presentation must be related to the chosen specialty(ies), and studied throughout the year. Obviously, the key to your reflection must be based on a theme that you are passionate about, on which, at least, you can always bounce back and develop a line of argument.
And even if you know your subject perfectly, do not reveal all your knowledge during your presentation. Remain evasive on certain points, which the examiners will not fail to make you develop later. Thus, you will have plenty of time to prove your field of knowledge, without being caught off guard by questions that you would not have considered.
