College-Within-a-School, the first of its kind in the province, will launch in September 2025 “building on the success of existing School-Within-a-College initiatives and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program,” according to a press release issued this week.

Conestoga College will invest $5 million in renovations to Tollgate Technical Skills Center on Tollgate Road that will bolster technology and resources to offer a high-quality learning experience. A dedicated wing, additional parking and storage facilities are also planned.

“This partnership puts students first and provides a breadth of pathway options to maximize their learning opportunities,” said GEDSB director of education JoAnna Roberto. “With a significant investment from Conestoga, Grand Erie students can experience a college campus without leaving secondary school and expand their horizons to ease the transition to further education or training after high school.”

Conestoga will move programs to TTSC from its Brantford Airport campus and will be able to offer a broader range of courses including one-year Ontario College Certificate programs in electrical techniques, and motivate power fundamentals – automotive repair. A two-year Ontario College Diploma in motivated power technician – automotive service will also be available.

The larger space at TTSC will allow the college to introduce courses in trades training, personal support worker programming, and academic upgrading to meet the needs of local employers.

“I’m proud of the staff’s work finding a partner that aligns with our vision to learn, lead, and inspire all students,” said board chair Susan Gibson. “Grand Erie is committed to expanding options and pathways for students to learn technological skills and enter the skilled trades, and this partnership with Conestoga is a great example.”

Conestoga College established a presence in Brantford in 2012, and President John Tibbits said the partnership with the school board reflects their commitment to expanding and meeting the evolving needs of both students and the community.

“Our new space at TTSC will provide opportunities to successfully transition from high school to college, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to shape their future and meet employer needs.”
