The month of November is not even over when Geoff Keighley has decided to reveal the list of nominees for the contender for GOTY 2024, the famous game of the year. If the ceremony is going to celebrate its 10th anniversary, it is already at the heart of a controversy, since this year, it will be possible to elect a DLC, remake or remaster as the best game of the year. A sudden decision by the organizers which has caused debate – and even rage – on social networks for several days and that is understandable. Suddenly, the year Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree was released, Geoff Keighley changed the rules to allow FromSoftware to win a second statuette two years after the consecration of Elden Ring in 2022.
Of course, it is impossible to satisfy everyone by imposing a list of nominees, but if there are several categories, it is also to differentiate a new, complete game which does not require having the original game to function. It’s hard not to see this as a roundabout – and yet not very subtle – way of pleasing FromSoftware, especially since other games were more deserving of being nominated in the Game of the Year category. And then what about all the games that have not yet been released, which arrive between mid-November and the end of December and which are constantly forgotten, since Geoff Keighley is banking on the end of year holidays to ensure a large captive audience. We obviously won’t be surprised that this ceremony only aims to boost Mr Keighley’s lucrative business, but this year, it’s clearly the straw that breaks the camel’s back…
