It was three years ago at the latest and the new start has not been completely problem-free – among other things, the SAS strike created problems for foreign teams that booked flights to Sweden – but that does not stop the world’s biggest football cup from returning to Gothenburg.

On Sunday, the football cup Gothia cup kicks off again, after two tournaments in a row had to be canceled due to corona. But the new start has not been completely problem-free. The SAS strike led to several football teams, mainly teams from the USA, having their flights canceled.

– But it has brightened a lot in recent days. A number of affected teams managed to rebook. So right now it does not look like there will be major disruptions than any other year, says Malin Fahlén, communications manager at Gothia cup.

It was three years ago that over a thousand football teams visited Gothenburg to participate in the world’s largest football cup for young people last time.

TT: Has it meant any challenges to start the cup again?

– It is clear that it has been a bit rusty, but we have not had any major concerns than that, says Malin Fahlén and continues:

– Then it is a lot thanks to our officials that we can carry out this cup, and previously we have had a number of officials who have returned year after year. But it is clear that some of these have found other things to do during the summers now that they have not had the opportunity to get involved in the cup, which they will continue with this year.
