A female receptionist who was dismissed via text message receives 150,000 kroner in damages after a judgment in the Labor Court, writes the trade union Unionen’s magazine Kollega.

The woman was on sick leave from her job at a dentist in southern Sweden in August last year. When the sick leave was extended, she announced it in a text message to her boss. He replied that the reception could not be “without a receptionist” for so long.

“I am terminating you as of today. Thank you,” wrote the manager according to Colleague.

In a subsequent negotiation, the employer stated that the text message was sent as a joke, something the Union saw as an afterthought.

No representative of the dental practice ever appeared in the Labor Court. Therefore, the court rules in the woman’s favor through a so-called default judgment.

In addition to the damages, the reception must pay the Union’s legal costs of just over SEK 50,000.
