Bacon on ice cream
But it was a flop. Failed restaurant visits are now being spread on social media, mocking the restaurant chain’s AI attempts.
Among other things, customers have shared pictures where they got bacon as a topping on their ice cream, writes Danish tv2.
Several restaurants have already stopped using the AI robot. Before the month of July, the idea is that all the restaurants should have pulled the plug on the technology and go back to regular staff taking orders.
McDonald’s refuses to admit defeat
But McDonalds doesn’t want to call it a flop.
– Although there have been successes so far, we feel there is an opportunity to investigate voice ordering systems more broadly, reads a statement from McDonalds, writes Today’s news.
But for customers, the robot has clearly been a flop.
Difficult for dialects
It was difficult for the AI robot to understand some dialects.
In addition, background noise made it difficult for the AI to understand what customers ordered, which led to them getting completely the wrong things in the bag, writes BBC.
Butter instead of caramel topping
Videos of customers receiving crazy orders are spreading on social media. A customer who ordered caramel sauce on his ice cream got butter instead. Another had to pay for nine cups of tea that she did not order.
Other restaurants are catching on anyway
The flop hasn’t stopped other US restaurant chains from also testing AI staff.
In Sweden, Dunkin Donuts and Wendy’s are among the better-known brands. But also restaurant chains such as Taco Johns, Krystal and Checkers and Rally’s are testing AI in the drive-thru doors. Even those with mixed success, write Restaurant Business Online.
