Google Tests New Design in Search Filters

In addition to working on generative AI, Google is also testing a tweak to make Search show which filter you’re currently using. Currently, Google uses a simple underscore on mobile to indicate which Search filter you are using. This active indicator differs from the Material 3 version with rounded ends.

Google reflects Material 3 theme in search filters

Google is testing a new design that uses a rounded rectangle with a dark grey/blue background. Dynamic Color on Android would be a nice touch, as a lighter hue is used when the dark theme is enabled. It’s definitely more specific than the current approach. Search and topic filters are not combined in this design; The second appears as a pill below.

While this change isn’t widely available yet, it does appear in some Incognito sessions. It is unclear whether this design will be reflected in Material 3 at a later date. The prominence of this approach is much nicer than underlining, but Google Search mostly retains its own design language.
