Google hasn’t yet enabled system-level Predictive Back in Android 14, but the in-app version is live in some apps, including the latest Gmail. Predictive Back shows a preview of the home screen when you swipe back from the left/right edge of an app. This aims to address how the current rollback could lead to people accidentally leaving the app. Google found that the new Predictive Back feature has been shown to outperform the existing experience in terms of end users’ task completion, preference, satisfaction, trust, and premiumness. He wants third-party developers to adopt it.
Gmail enabled Predictive Back feature
Meanwhile, Android 14 introduces support for custom in-app transitions/animations, and this is delivered on a per-app basis without needing to enable anything. Predictive Back (version 2024.03.03.x) feature in Gmail was recently noticed when closing an email. This completes the existing animation when tapping the back button in the top left corner.
