Google’s multimodal generative Gemini AI is capable of generating a multitude of outputs, including images. After the tool was found to be constantly creating faulty images of historical scenes, Google decided to pull the emergency brake and temporarily paused Gemini’s ability to create images of people altogether.
Google Gemini pauses rendering images of people
As Google announced at X, the company is aware of the problems with AI’s rendering capabilities and is working to solve them. “While we do this, we will pause people’s image creation process and re-release an improved version in the near future,” the statement reads.
The statement came shortly after controversy over Gemini’s rendering of inaccurate historical images, including series of images depicting racially diverse Nazi-era German soldiers and U.S. senators from the 1800s. Without citing specific examples or problems, the company made clear in an earlier announcement that it had good reasons to try to create diverse groups of people in ordinary circumstances. At this point, “Gemini’s AI image generation creates a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people all over the world use it. But the sign is missing here.” came the explanation.
