Google paid 26 billion to be the default search engine

The US government’s landmark lawsuit against Google continues in the United States. The Californian company is accused of maintaining a monopoly on the search engine market. Seven weeks after the start of this trial, Sundar Pichai, the boss of Google, should, according to Reuters, testify this Monday, October 30. A testimony which comes after revelations on Friday on the amount that Google would have paid to ensure that it appears as the default search engine on certain phones and browsers.

26.3 billion dollars is the amount that Google would have spent in 2021 to ensure that its search engine is displayed by default. An amount revealed during the trial by a senior company official and reported by Bloomberg.

Still according to the American media, these expenses have multiplied by more than 3.5 since 2014. What has also tripled is the revenue that the Mountain View firm earns from its search advertising.

26 billion dollars may be a tidy sum, but it is still far from the 146 billion in revenue generated in 2021.

In its defense, Google has, in the past, assured that its success was simply the result of the quality of its services.

The default installation still appears to be a holy grail for developers. During the trial, the Microsoft chairman and CEO recounted his efforts to try, in vain, to convince Apple to choose Bing instead of Google. Satya Nadella believes that this “ would change the situation » for Bing. Same observation of failure for DuckDuckGo.
