There has been movement on the Chrome Web Store. Google has just officially rolled out its certification badge system through which you can easily identify trusted extensions.
The first badge, attached directly next to the developer’s name, indicates that the latter is a trusted, recognized publisher whose identity has been verified by Google. It also states that the extension’s publisher adheres to the policies of the Chrome Web Store Developer Program and has a positive track record.
The second badge, Selection, is awarded by Google to extensions, which respect the good technical practices suggested by the Mountain View firm. Their design must also provide a good user experience.
For an extension to obtain this certification, assigned manually by a dedicated team, it must respect the recommendations of the Chrome Web Store, in particular by using the latest APIs of the platform, but also by respecting the privacy of users.
Its publisher will also have to make sure to have a page listing all its creations, and that the sheet of its extension includes a detailed description as well as good quality illustrations.
