Good news if you are a Free Mobile subscriber! You can now send SMS messages via Wi-Fi, but also via 4G, via your mobile data, and this, at no extra cost. Practical when the traditional network is of poor quality!

Despite all the efforts of the operators, network coverage can sometimes be poor in certain areas, which can cause communication problems. In fact, it is then impossible to send an SMS or call a correspondent with your smartphone. Fortunately, there are technologies to get around this problem. After launching VoLTE and VoWiFi calls for its subscribers at the end of 2023 – VoLTE allows calls to be made in 4G, while VoWiFi allows them to be made via a Wi-Fi network – Free now allows them to send SMS via Wi-Fi, but also in 4G via their mobile data.

“You can now send all your SMS messages via the 4G or Wi-Fi network in metropolitan France. The option is automatically activated for all Free mobile subscribers and available depending on the compatibility of your phone (Android and iOS)”announced the official account on July 18 Free_1337 on social networks. It was about time!

SMS via Wi-Fi: an option that has been long awaited

After a long test phase, this option is automatically activated for all subscribers. However, it may be necessary to update their smartphone to benefit from it. Note that this addition will have no impact on the amount of their bill – which would be a shame given that the operator has committed to not increasing the price of its packages until 2027! However, this option is not available abroad for the moment.

It was about time that Free Mobile customers could take advantage of it! This service has already been available at Orange, Bouygues Telecom and even SFR since 2019. The historic operator even allows MMS to be sent via Wi-Fi! It was only in 2022 that Free began to take an interest in deploying SMS via Wi-Fi. Better late than never!
