Kosuyolu High Specialization Training and Research Hospital will start liver transplants in March 2023. Gastroenterology Surgeon Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Duman told Anadolu Agency (AA) that Kosuyolu has been at the forefront of organ transplantation for years, as well as surgical and internal services. Specialist Duman also underlined that Koşuyolu is the hospital where the most heart and lung transplants are performed in Turkey.
Stating that liver transplants were performed successfully in the gastroenterology surgery clinic established during his assistantship period, Duman added that these procedures were suspended because the physicians who performed this went to Ankara.
Talking about the decision to restart the liver transplant at the hospital, Duman, his colleague and teammate Assoc. Dr. He stated that Mürşit Dinçer received transplant training in Malatya, and then they completed the necessary Ministry of Health procedure.

Stating that their experience in transplantation will turn into an advantage, Duman said that intensive care units are suitable for taking care of transplant patients and that there are trained personnel involved in this.
Making a statement regarding their application for transplantation, Duman said, “We have also established a team to evaluate the patients who are candidates for transplantation. Patients will apply to the gastroenterology and gastroenterology surgery clinic, they will be evaluated whether organ failure requires transplantation. Then they will be placed on the preparation list. At first, we will start with transplantation from a cadaver. We will also begin transplantation with split liver tissue.” said.

Making a statement about the health problems that lead to liver failure and transplantation, Dinçer said that viral hepatitis, which was common in the past, caused alcohol-induced liver failure, but that viral hepatitis has regressed today, insufficiency due to liver fat and transplantation indications come to the fore.
Dinçer stated that the number of patients waiting for transplantation has increased but organ donation has decreased:
“We are the first in the world in organ donation from living to living beings. We are behind the 50th place in cadaveric, that is, donating the organ of a deceased person. When we transplant from a living person to a living person, we risk the life of another completely healthy person. “We need to increase cadaveric organ donation. Noting that there are many people waiting for organ donation in Turkey, Dinçer stated that from the years of organ transplantation in the country until November 2022, approximately 4,000 of the 20 thousand liver transplants can be performed with organs taken from cadavers, that is, 75-80 percent of the transplants are realized with living donations.
Assoc. Dr. Mürşit Dinçer, in his evaluation regarding the fact that they will start liver transplantation, stated that the hospital administration attaches importance to transplantation and that lung and heart transplantations are actively carried out in their hospitals, and said:
