“Good luck trying to chase away an annoyed dwarf”

Total War: Warhammer 3 is getting update 5.2, bringing tons of new features. One of the most important new features: Dwarves can finally build a huge empire under the mountain. There’s even a new feature for all factions – and it’s completely free.

What kind of game is this?

This is what’s coming up in Total War: Warhammer 3: In a new blog post, developer Mitch Heastie has introduced four new features and revisions for the upcoming update 5.2. This includes a new mechanic for the dwarves.

If you play a legendary dwarven commander, the new update gives you the opportunity to explore “The Deeps”. In every city you can build a gate to connect the settlement to a tunnel network:

  • This gives you access to more building slots and unique buildings that can only be built in the depths.
  • The tunnels are underground and connect all settlements that have a gate, so you can get supplies even when under siege.
  • Since all cities are connected to one access, the coverage becomes weaker the larger the network becomes.
  • Upgrading the depths is expensive and you’ll need to do a lot of research to fully exploit the mechanics.
  • According to the developers, this is intended to serve a style of play that the dwarves prefer: isolating themselves. Instead of going all out on expansion, you can use the depths to build three or four mountain fortresses and strengthen them so much that no one can take them anymore – just like a stubborn dwarf.

This is not mandatory, but simply serves to provide an alternative way of playing. But so that not only the dwarves benefit from the update, there is also new content for all factions.

Better mechanics for 2 factions, new feature for all

Other content featured includes two major overhauls for the Gods of Chaos and the Grand Empire of Cathay:

  • You can now create Chaos Cults specifically and build more and better buildings there. This should help to eliminate their “unpredictability”. They function roughly like the Skaven undercities, only smaller.
  • The caravans of Cathay are getting a redesign and are supposed to be roughly based on those of the Chaos Dwarves. However, information on this is still missing.
  • There is also a new feature for all factions in Immortal Empires: “Unusual Locations”. In many settlements, special “buildings” can appear that are somehow related to the area and provide bonuses.

Similar to landmarks, some of these locations are only available in certain settlements, while others can appear in multiple locations. There are said to be 20 of these locations in total, of which the developers have already shown 2 and several have been teased:

  • The Tomb of the Grail Knights provides control and removes corruption
  • The Grand Illuminator’s residence contaminates the area with chaos corruption, but provides prestige in the Empire
  • The icons of other locations include an imperial port, a Skaven ritual site and the Chaos Star
  • Heastie stresses that this is all a very early stage of things and that a lot will change. But the ideas are already in place. It is not yet clear when exactly update 5.2 will be released. However, it is already preparing the DLC, which will be released later and will bring new Khorne commanders.
