Even the first trailers for M3gan have the latest horror doll in cinemas Meme icon with TikTok hype raised. As was revealed before the theatrical release, the videos were so popular, especially with the younger target group, that Gerard Johnstone cut the film again for a tamer PG-13 rating.
The lack of bloody violence was a major criticism of M3gan for my colleague Max. The film, on the other hand, showed me that good horror doesn’t need any explicit harshness.
M3gan is very creepy without explicit violence
M3GAN – Trailer 2 (German) HD
Films with other horror dolls like Chucky trump above all with set pieces in which the victims are killed in the most bizarre and funny way possible. In M3gan, the charisma of the playmate equipped with advanced artificial intelligence is enough oppressive or bizarre scenes to guarantee.
When Me3gan the young protagonist Cady (Violet McGraw) die David Guetta’s anthem Titanium as a lullaby audition, the moment is not only hilarious but also pretty scary. The scene in which the horror doll lures the neighbor’s poor dog with an overdriven imitated autotune voice oscillates between these two moods in a similarly skilful manner. Not forgetting the moment when M3gan uses surreal movements to chase a hateful boy through the woods who is threatening Cady.
The actual kills are mostly in M3gan just the icing on the cake. Due to the successful structure of the scenes or grotesque details (such as song and dance interludes), the horror film doesn’t need any excessive brutality.
The characters also make M3gan a good horror film
It also helps that the main characters in Johnstone’s work are more than superfluous cannon fodder. You’re really interested in their fates and developments and don’t catch yourself suddenly siding with the killer icon – which can happen in films with poorly developed characters. M3gan, on the other hand, takes itself surprisingly plenty of time for Cady’s traumawho loses her parents right at the beginning in a car accident.

MEGAN – The first scrap of the new year! | Review
Cady and M3gan are later seen together for a product demonstration, with the girl telling the doll about a memory of her parents that M3gan records and stores for her. The scene exudes a soulful tone that not only caught those present at the demonstration visibly touched will.
Cady is the emotional center of the horror film. It also stars Girls and Get Out star Allison Williams as the girl’s aunt exciting ambivalent character.
Gemma is shown as an overwhelmed surrogate mother who struggles to balance the need for nurturing with her professional life as a toy designer. While she is concerned about Cady’s well-being, this is overshadowed time and again by the fact that Gemma is aware of the tragic fate of her niece for M3gan’s commercial success.
Apparently there will be another one soon Unrated cut to be published by M3gan. But with these figures and the bizarrely wacky nature of M3gan, he’s actually superfluous.
