Easy and effective according to our aging specialist doctor.
Who doesn’t want to slow down their aging? To do this, there is one parameter that should not be overlooked: diet. Our food choices have a direct impact on the aging of our cells. And certain dietary behaviors can help slow down aging, as Dr. Christophe de Jaeger, a doctor who has specialized in the study of preventing human aging for over 30 years, explains.
The first thing to do according to this specialist is to increase your protein consumption: “We often tend to eat less and less protein, but we need it to maintain our muscle mass and thus prevent sarcopenia, which will promote a sedentary lifestyle and sugar regulation problems since muscle consumes sugar.” Sarcopenia is the natural loss of muscle with age. Among the foods richest in protein to include as often as possible in your menu: eggs (especially egg whites), meat (Brison meat is one of the richest in protein), soy, cheese (Grana Padano, Mimolette and Parmesan especially) and tuna.
Second point of vigilance to have to slow down your aging: hydration. Make sure to maintain good hydration: in practice, it is advisable to drink 1.5 L to 2 L of water per day, in addition to the water intake through food because low hydration is harmful to the kidneys. Cells that find themselves in a situation of dehydration function less well. Among the very hydrating foods, raw vegetables, oils rich in omega 3 (linseed oil, camelina oil, at a rate of 3 tablespoons of oil per day, ideally at dinner) or even chard. It is mainly composed of water, which makes it excellent for hydration.
Finally and most importantly – because few people have this important information in mind – to slow down aging, you have to eat less. “Generally speaking, we eat too much. However, calorie restriction is a factor in preventing aging and improving health,” concludes the specialist. An American study published in 2023 in the journal Nature Aging and conducted on 220 healthy adults showed that those who reduced their caloric intake (by about 12%) slowed the rate of their aging. As a reminder, a sedentary man should consume about 2200 calories per day and a woman 1800 calories. From the age of 50, these figures drop to about 2000 calories for a man and 1600 for a woman.
