Dustin Johnson is on site at Centurion Club outside London for the first competition on the new LIV tour.
The new tour, which is funded by Saudi Arabia, has become a major watershed in the golf world. The PGA Tour, for example, has tried to stop its players from participating in the LIV tour by threatening them with exclusion.
– Right now it is of course difficult to say what the consequences will be, but right now I have terminated my membership on the PGA Tour. I will play here now and that is the plan, says Johnson.
A consequence of Johnson’s decision will be that he will not be allowed to participate in next year’s Ryder Cup in Rome. The two-time major winner had previously declared that he will not play the LIV tour, but has changed.
– I am very grateful for the PGA Tour and all it has given me. But this is something that I feel is best for me and my family and I look forward to playing, says Johnson.
Englishman Lee Westwood, German Martin Kaymer and American Phil Mickelson are some of the other big names on the LIV tour.
