Golf: Leader Natalija Guseva Could Become First Russian LPGA Tour Winner: ‘Anything Could Happen’

Guseva had great junior success in Europe from 2017 and a couple of years onwards. She enrolled at the University of Miami in 2021 and received a card on the LPGA tour for this season as the first Russian.

Now she is one of four players leading in windy Honolulu, Hawaii after two rounds at Hoakalei Country Club.

– I really tried to be in the moment because it was very windy, says Guseva who had 68 and 67 strokes and with -9 she shares the lead with Yuri Yoshida (Japan), Liu Ruixin (China) and A Lim Kim (South Korea).

Be afraid to miss the cut

The windy conditions made Guseva unsure of the outcome.

– I thought: “It could be that anything could happen today. I could shoot a great round and not even make the cut,” she says according to AP.

The cut, i.e. the limit to continue playing, went on par.

Frida Kinhult is tied for 15th with -4 and Pernilla Lindberg for 21st with -3, the only Swedes in the starting field.
