Golden Globes: can the winners predict the future Oscar winner?

It was the beginning of the high mass of American cinema. The Golden Globes open the award season in Hollywood. The 82nd ceremony will award the first awards on the night of Sunday January 5 to Monday January 6, 2025 at 2 a.m. (French time), since Los Angeles.

If the French are more accustomed to following the Oscars, the final highlight of last year’s awards season in the United States, it would be wrong to ignore the results of the Golden Globes. Indeed, this ceremony, the first of the year, allows us to discover the first favorites of the small world of Hollywood and to make first predictions on the winner of the Oscars, on March 2.

It’s not uncommon for winners of the Best Picture category at the Oscars to have previously won Golden Globes. This is the case ofOppenheimer (best drama film 2024), Nomadland (best drama film 2021), Green Book (best comedy film in 2019). The same goes for other categories, such as those of interpretations: Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Emma Stone (Poor creatures), Will Smith (The Method Williams), Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere all at once) or even Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), to name but a few, were dubbed by the Golden Globes before winning the Oscar in recent years.

However, this also doesn’t mean that the predictions are 100% reliable, and Oscar and Golden Globe voters have had divergent opinions in recent years. Indeed, Everything everywhere all at once missed the Golden Globe for best comedy film in 2023 before winning the Oscar for best film. Same story for The Fabelmans And The Banshees of Inisherinawarded at the Golden Globes but snubbed at the Oscars to the detriment of Coda in 2022.

Before the 2025 Golden Globes, the big favorite of this 82nd edition was the film by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez. With no less than 10 nominations, the Spanish-language musical was at the top of the nominations list. Also named were the films Wicked, The Substance, Anora, Dune: part 2, Conclavebut also the feature films that we will discover at the start of the year A complete stranger Or The Brutalist.
