Gold bars and money on the pitch – Dortmund’s supporters are protesting the reform of the Champions League in a special way

Gold bars and money on the pitch – Dortmunds supporters

The Champions League is due to be renewed for the 2024–2025 season. Playing cards also flew onto the field in the meeting between AC Milan and PSG, but for a different reason.

The meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United in the group stage of the Champions League on Tuesday night was interrupted for a moment in the second half, when supporters of the home team Dortmund threw plastic gold bars and play money onto the field and held a sheet in the stands that read: “You don’t care about the sport – you only care about the money”.

On the second sheet was a caricature depicting the Juventus boss Andrea Agnellipresident of Fifa Gianni Infantino and the president of PSG Nasser Al-Khelaif.

The players collected most of the items off the field, but some of the items remained on the surface of the grass until the end of the match.

Dortmund won the match 2–0. Niclas Füllkrug scored the opening goal in the 26th minute and Julian Brand struck The final readings ten minutes before the end of the actual game time.

The attack by Dortmund supporters was aimed at UEFA, which plans to renew the Champions League for the 2024-2025 season. In the new tournament format, 36 clubs will play instead of the current 32 teams.

The group stage will be replaced by a common series for all teams, where each team will play eight matches. The best eight in the series go directly to the playoffs in the top 16.

The reform means more matches for the teams playing in the Champions League, because in the current model each team has played six matches in the group stage.

One of the Dortmund supporters’ sheets contained the link to the sitewhere supporters oppose the reform.

– Here, only the fans at the screens are served, so that they can consume more football on TV. This leads to higher TV revenues, i.e. additional money for clubs at the expense of players, fans and domestic competition, the website reads.

The top spot in the F group changed

Play money was also thrown on the field in the second game of the group in the meeting between AC Milan and PSG. The goal of the Milanese was the PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarummawho moved from his breeding club from Milan to Paris in 2021.

The banknotes featured Donnarumma’s face and the number 71, which, according to Neapolitan tradition, means “a man with no values”.

Milan won 2–1. PSG took the lead at the beginning of the match, but the Milan club quickly equalized Rafael Leaon with a scissor kick. of Milan Olivier Giroud scored the winning goal in the 50th minute.

AC Milan rose to five points and placed third in the group, ahead of Newcastle. Dortmund now leads the group with seven points ahead of PSG.
