Norfolk OPP say Jason Berg, 38, died in the Dec. 9 fire that caused an estimated $ 1-million damage to a duplex on Turkey Point Road.
“We are all devastated with this sudden and unexpected loss,” Berg’s family said in a posting with the online fundraiser. “Jason and his beloved cats were unable to escape a house fire that took place at his home on Turkey Point Road.”
Berg was described as a hard-working carpenter who took pride in his job and was always willing to help friends and family on projects.
“Jason was a great friend to many and very devoted to his family,” said the posting. “He will be missed tremendously.”
As of Tuesday morning, $ 3,240 had been raised of a $ 15,000 goal.
The fire remains under investigation.
Norfolk firefighters, OPP and paramedics were sent to the home shortly after 8 pm on Dec. 9.
When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames. They were able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to outbuildings on the property, police said in a statement this week.
Earlier, firefighters said fire was concentrated on the main floor of one of the units in the converted century home. Despite the efforts of firefighters, the blaze extended into the attic and both units were destroyed.
Another occupant of the duplex and two dogs escaped injury.
A fire official said first responders did not hear working smoke alarms upon arrival.
Norfolk OPP and the OPP forensic identification service are continuing to investigate.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office attended the scene and has completed its investigation, said police.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
