GNTM is really good at one thing: producing trash TV stars

GNTM is really good at one thing producing trash TV

A four-month journey through the world of fashion comes to an end: Tomorrow Heidi Klum will choose the new Germany’s next top model. Four candidates are still fighting for victory. Noëlla, Lou-Anne, Martina, Luca and Anita still have a chance of winning in the final. (All candidates of this season GNTM in the overview)

What do the Germany’s next top model candidates do after the show?

But what is the point of participating in the longest-serving casting show in Germany? So apart from the certainly not disturbing 100,000 euros in prize money and one or the other traumatic memory of a bizarre challenge?

Germany’s Next Topmodel looks back on 17 seasons, 16 years and over 300 candidates to date. The fact that the ProSieben show did not succeed during this time produce a real top model, is old hat. But of course it would be wrong to reduce GNTM only to its competition and its supposed top model claim. Heidi Klum is more successful in creating celebrity than any other show in Germany. Just a little different than the basic concept of GNTM.

The amazing trash TV output from GNTM

A rough evaluation of 16 years of GNTM brings a frightening result to light: those who take part in Germany’s next top model increase theirs Danger of appearing in a trash TV show at some point, substantial. One Model career is possiblebut comparatively unlikely.

Although there are of course exceptions like Céline Bethmann, Sarina Nowak or most recently Viola. Ex-candidates were also able to establish themselves as influencers (Stefanie Giesinger) or moderators (Rebecca Mir). But the road to reality TV towers above all, as the list below shows.

  • Germany’s next top model candidates are increasingly being pushed out of trash shows. But what is striking here: GNTM’s greatest times as a boot camp for the jungle camp were a few years ago. The strongest trash TV vintages were seasons 1 to 4. More than half of all candidates in the selection came from this period.

The last 3 seasons, on the other hand, produced hardly any trash celebrities worth mentioning. Why is that?

The answer is simple: Trash television has evolved and is now looking elsewhere for newcomers. Of the falling GNTM trash trend coincides with the rise of reality shows like Love Island and Bachelor in Paradise.

Love Island started in Germany in 2017, Bachelor in Paradise in 2018. Since then, the traditional trash TV contact points for former GNTM candidates have been occupied by the most charismatic participants in these shows. For example Evelyn Burdecki, Domenico de Cicco or Mike Heiter and Elena Miras.

That is the current reality aristocracy. And GNTM candidates are more and more often left empty-handed or have to be content with a career as an influencer.
